What to expect during your roof replacement

June 28, 2026 · Vlaag Roofing

If you’ve never had a roof replaced, the whole thing can feel like a black box. It’s actually a pretty predictable process, and knowing what’s coming makes the day go a lot smoother. Here’s how it usually plays out.

Before the crew shows up

A few days ahead, materials get delivered and staged, usually in the driveway or along the side of the house. Don’t be surprised to see a pallet of shingles show up before the crew does.

On your end, the prep is light. Move your cars out of the driveway, take down anything fragile hanging on interior walls (the hammering travels), and clear a path around the house.

If you’ve got pets, plan to keep them inside and calm. A roof replacement is loud.

The day of the work

Most homes in our area are a one-day job. The crew tears off the old roof down to the decking, checks the wood underneath, and lays down new underlayment before the shingles go on.

There’s a lot of noise and some debris, and that’s normal. We protect landscaping and use catch areas so the tear-off doesn’t end up in your flower beds.

By the end of the day, the new roof is on, the flashing and boots are replaced, and the slow part begins. That’s the cleanup. (Here’s everything a replacement includes.)

After the last shingle

Cleanup is where good crews separate themselves. We run magnetic sweepers across the yard and driveway to pull up stray nails, and we haul off the old material so you’re not left with a pile.

Before we leave, we walk the property with you. You should expect a clean yard, a tidy roofline, and answers to any questions, plus your workmanship warranty paperwork.

That’s the whole thing: prep, one noisy day, and a careful cleanup. If a storm has your roof on the way out, book a free inspection and we’ll get you started.
