Black streaks on your roof: what they mean

April 15, 2026 · Vlaag Roofing

You’ve probably noticed dark streaks running down a roof or two in your neighborhood, maybe your own. They look like dirt or water stains, but they’re usually something alive. In Georgia’s humidity, this is one of the most common things homeowners ask us about.

What those streaks actually are

The black streaks are algae, specifically a type called gloeocapsa magma. It feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles and spreads in warm, damp conditions.

Georgia gives it everything it wants. Long humid summers, plenty of rain, and shade from trees all help it take hold and creep across the shingles.

You’ll often see it worst on the north side of the roof, since that slope stays shaded and stays damp longer after it rains.

Is it actually hurting your roof

In the early stages, the algae is mostly a cosmetic problem. It looks bad, but a few streaks on an otherwise healthy roof aren’t a reason to panic.

Left alone for years, though, it can start to matter. The algae holds moisture against the shingles and can eat at the granules that protect them, which slowly ages the roof faster than it should.

So a fresh streak or two isn’t an emergency, but a roof that’s heavily covered and has been for a long time is worth a closer look.

Cleaning versus replacing

If the shingles underneath are still in good shape, the streaks can often be cleaned. A proper soft wash with the right solution kills the algae without blasting the granules off, which a pressure washer will do. Cleaning is a job for someone who knows roofs, not a rented power washer.

Sometimes the streaks are just the visible sign of a roof that’s already worn out. If the shingles are curling, losing granules, or well past their years, cleaning only buys a little time. In that case it makes more sense to look at a replacement than to keep washing an aging roof.
