Signs it's time for a new roof after a storm

Roofs don’t usually fail all at once. They give you signals for a while first, and you just have to know what you’re looking at. After a storm, some of those signals get louder. Here’s what tells us a roof is genuinely near the end versus one that’s still got some life.
Signs you can see from the ground
You don’t need a ladder to catch the obvious ones. From the yard, look for shingles that are curling at the edges, cupping in the middle, or missing outright.
Dark streaks and bald patches where the granules have worn away are another tell. That’s the shingle’s protection wearing thin. So is a roofline that looks wavy or saggy instead of straight.
A yard full of granules after every storm means the roof is shedding its surface faster than it should.
Signs you’ll find inside
Your attic and ceilings tell the rest of the story. Water stains, especially ones that spread or come back after rain, mean water is already getting in somewhere.
Head into the attic on a bright day. If you can see daylight coming through the roof boards, that’s a direct path for water. Damp insulation or a musty smell points the same direction.
Any of these means it’s time to stop guessing and get the roof looked at closely.
When storm damage tips the scale
An older roof and a fresh storm are a bad combination. A roof that was already worn might have handled a few more years, right up until hail stripped the last of its granules or wind broke the seals across a slope.
That’s the moment a lot of homeowners face the repair-or-replace decision. If the roof was near the end and the storm finished the job, replacement is usually the honest call.
