How to spot hail damage on your roof

May 12, 2026 · Vlaag Roofing

After a hail storm, the first question every homeowner asks is the same: did it actually hurt my roof? The honest answer is that you usually can’t tell for sure from the driveway. But there are real clues, and knowing them helps you decide whether it’s worth getting a closer look.

Here’s what we tell our neighbors to look for.

Look for granules before you look at shingles

Your shingles are coated in tiny granules. That’s the gritty stuff that protects them from the sun and helps them shed water, and hail knocks it loose.

So before you squint at the roof, check the ground. Look in your gutters, at the base of your downspouts, and along the drip line where rain runs off. A pile of black or gray grit after a storm is one of the clearest signs your roof took a hit.

Fresh granule loss means the protective layer is thinning right where the hail struck.

Check the metal, it tells the truth

Shingles can hide damage. Metal can’t.

Walk around and look at your gutters, downspouts, and any metal vents or flashing on the roof. Dents and dimples in soft metal mean the hail was big enough and hard enough to do damage. If it dented your gutters, it almost certainly bruised your shingles too.

While you’re at it, check other soft surfaces around the house, like the AC unit fins, the mailbox, or the grill lid. They’re all hail gauges if you know to look.

Know the difference between cosmetic and real damage

Not every mark is a problem. A few scuffs on an otherwise healthy roof might be cosmetic. What matters is bruising, meaning the soft spots where the hail cracked the shingle mat underneath.

You generally can’t see bruising from the ground, and pressing on it isn’t something to do yourself on a steep, slick roof. That’s the point where a free inspection earns its keep. We get up there safely, find the bruises, and show you photos so you’re not guessing.

If the damage is real and storm-related, we document it properly so it’s on the record before your insurance window closes.

The bottom line

Granules in the gutter and dents on the metal are your two best early warnings. If you’re seeing either after a storm, it’s worth having someone look closely, sooner rather than later, before the next rain finds the weak spots.

We do that for free, with no obligation. Book a roof inspection and we’ll give you a straight answer on what the hail actually did.
