Wind damage vs hail damage: how to tell them apart

June 2, 2026 · Vlaag Roofing

People tend to lump all storm damage together, but hail and wind do very different things to a roof. Knowing which one you’re dealing with helps you understand what kind of fix you’re looking at, and it matters when it’s time to document a claim.

Below is the short version of how we tell them apart.

What hail does

Hail is an impact problem. Stones hit the roof straight down and knock the granules off the shingle surface, leaving soft, bruised spots where the mat underneath got cracked.

You won’t usually see hail damage as missing shingles. You’ll see it as scattered bruising, granule loss, and dents on the metal, meaning your gutters, vents, and flashing. It’s spread across the slopes that faced the storm.

The damage is often subtle, which is why a lot of hail hits go unnoticed until the roof starts aging fast. (More on the signs in our guide on spotting hail damage.)

What wind does

Wind is a leverage problem. It gets under the edges of shingles, breaks the adhesive seal, and folds them back. Sometimes it tears them off entirely.

So wind damage tends to look more dramatic: lifted or creased shingles, bare spots where shingles blew away, debris on the roof. It often clusters along the edges, ridges, and corners where wind pressure is highest.

The sneaky part is the broken seal. A shingle can flap back down and look fine while the seal underneath is gone, which leaves it loose for the next gust.

Why the difference matters

The type of damage shapes the fix. A few wind-torn shingles near a ridge might be a quick repair. Widespread hail bruising across every slope is a different conversation, and sometimes points toward replacement.

It also matters for documentation. Hail and wind leave different signatures, and a clear, accurate record of what actually happened to your roof is what keeps everyone on the same page, you and your insurer both.

When we inspect, we identify which one hit you (sometimes both) and show you the evidence in photos. No guessing.
