Metal vs asphalt shingle roofs in Georgia
May 3, 2026 · Vlaag Roofing
If you’re replacing a roof, sooner or later someone brings up metal. It’s a fair question, and both metal and asphalt shingles have a real place on Georgia homes. Here’s how they compare for our heat, our storms, and how you actually live under them.
Holding up to Georgia weather
Our climate is rough in two ways: relentless summer heat and the storms that roll through spring and summer. Both materials handle it, but differently.
Metal reflects a lot of the sun’s heat instead of soaking it in, and it sheds heavy rain fast. It also stands up well to wind, which is a real plus when the storms get serious.
Asphalt shingles take the heat fine too, though the sun slowly ages them over the years. Hail is where they’re more vulnerable, since it can strip granules and bruise the surface. Our post on how to spot hail damage on your roof covers what that looks like.
Longevity, looks, and noise
Metal usually lasts longer, often well beyond a shingle roof, so it can be close to a once-in-your-lifetime decision. That’s a big part of its appeal.
Looks are personal. Asphalt shingles give you that traditional neighborhood look in tons of colors, while metal reads more modern or agricultural depending on the profile. Some folks love it, some don’t, and both can look great on the right house.
Noise is the myth that won’t die. A properly installed metal roof over solid decking and underlayment isn’t the tin-roof-in-a-rainstorm sound people imagine, though it can be slightly louder than shingles in a hard rain.
The cost tradeoff and what fits you
Metal costs more up front than asphalt, plain and simple. You’re paying for material and a more specialized install, so the day-one number is higher.
The flip side is lifespan. Because metal can last so much longer, some homeowners see it as spreading that cost over more years, while others would rather keep the up-front number down with shingles.
